Garnet

Garnet

Garnet is the birthstone of January. It comes in many forms and colors, but is most well known in the fiery red gem form most commonly found in jewelry. Its name, which originates from the Middle English word gernet and the Latin word granatum, means deep red seed, alluding to its resemblance to the seeds of the pomegranate. Pomegranates are a symbolic theme in many tarot decks, including this one.

Much like rose quartz, garnet is a stone that attracts and supports the energy of love. However, it is more sensual and passionate. It promotes deep and lasting relationships with others, be they romantic or platonic. It also promotes creative energy, will power, and psychic protection. It is like a flame of passion and desire, which is why I chose it to represent the suit of wands. (Specifically, I was inspired by Rhodolite garnet which is lighter and more pink/purple in hue than the deeper red varieties of garnet.) As January’s birthstone it also represents new beginnings.

Garnet is also special to me on a personal level. January is an important month in my life in terms of romance because it’s when I met and later married my husband. (In fact, today is our anniversary!) When we were dating he gave me this ring with a citrine in the center for my birth month, two garnets on either side representing the birth of our relationship, and diamonds, which are the stone of his birth month. It’s one of my treasures.

The stone the ring is sitting on is also a garnet in its raw, opaque form.
